Suomen Verkko-Opisto and Omnia, the Joint Authority Education in Espoo Region, jointly launch live online teaching where learning materials are also in digital format. Educational services are offered at Omnia in connection with Espoo Adult Education Centre. The goal is to continue the corporate and educational institution collaboration developed during the preceding project. Special focus is placed on teaching via the web, where learning materials are also online.
Phase one and phase two of the Suomen Verkko-Opisto project were implemented in 2011–2014 as an educational institution-company collaboration involving over ten project partners. During the project, experiences and expertise were shared regarding e-learning methods and how digital materials can be utilized in teaching.
The Suomen Verkko-Opisto project gave educational institutions an opportunity to try out various collaboration models with companies, as well as access to a wide expert network of online training entrepreneurs. For teachers, it offered training, interesting events, current information on online learning, and models for producing online learning materials. Teachers and students had the opportunity to try out online courses and test new learning methods, while companies received valuable user experience for their products.
In phase three of the project, Suomen Verkko-Opisto's operating models are further developed at Espoo Adult Education Centre as a two-year project in cooperation with online learning companies. Corporate collaboration for Suomen Verkko-Opisto is coordinated by Promentor Solutions Oy. In the autumn, online courses in several different languages, music, and programming will be launched at the Adult Education Centre. Contact teaching is implemented online, and companies' online and other digital learning materials are used as learning content. In languages, the partner is Promentor Solutions Oy, in programming Viope Solutions Oy, and in music RockWay Oy.
At best, online teaching and online material enrich instruction and increase its meaningfulness for both teacher and student. According to surveys conducted at Suomen Verkko-Opisto, teachers see online material as a very welcome addition to teaching. It is not a teaching format intended to replace classroom instruction – quite the contrary! Contact teaching can also be conducted online, enabling students to participate in training from anywhere with an internet connection – even while abroad or from home in life situations where leaving home is difficult.
