Digital Russian Language Phrasebook for the Finnish Border Guard
The Finnish Border Guard is adopting a digital phrasebook for Russian language border situations. The phrasebook operates as a cloud service on computers and mobile devices. The service is intended as practical support in Russian-language border inspection and border control situations. The app includes thousands of conversation templates suitable for border situations.
The phrasebook contains approximately 9,500 words in Russian with Finnish equivalents. There are about 1,500 Russian phrases with Finnish equivalents related to daily speech situations at the border. Users can search the digital phrasebook by single word, sentence, or topic title for Russian equivalents to Finnish expressions or vice versa. Russian sentences can be listened to. The guide serves both the customer and the official, helping border traffic flow smoothly. Questions and instructions can be presented to the customer on a tablet in Russian, and Finnish translations can be found for customer questions.
The phrasebook can also be used by students at the Border and Coast Guard Academy. Students can practice words, sentences, and phrases using the language studio in the web service. The service also enables all Border Guard personnel to independently maintain and develop their professional language skills. The guide was produced with support granted by the Internal Security Fund (ISF). The service is delivered to the Border Guard by Finnish company Promentor Solutions Oy.
